Welcome to this month's COCo ebulletin!

COCo Note

COCo launches its new website!

After many months of behind the scenes work, we are ready to launch our new website! With the development of our new site, we have made a huge leap from an out-dated static website to a dynamic CMS (Content Management System) that we can easily update ourselves. Many community groups are choosing to use Content Management Systems for their websites because they are often more flexible, easy to update, and much cheaper to build. The three most popular Content Management Systems are Drupal, Wordpress, and Joomla.

We learned a lot as we developed our new site (based on a Drupal CMS) and would be happy to share our experience with other community groups that are interested in developing a new website. We are also in the process of gathering references for strong community-oriented web developers, so if you have any such references, please email them to spencerm@coco-net.org

And now (drum roll)- we are excited to take you on a quick virtual tour of the site and introduce you to some of the highlights!  Go to: www.coco-net.org

We've kept the best of the old site...

  • The COCo Toolbox looks a little different but still provides the same direct access to quality community organizing tools - including many of the fundraising tools from mapthemoney.com
  • Legal Information Sheets are easily available for download along with other free multi-media COCo Publications
  • An online version of the E-bulletin - our monthly electronic newsletter is still posted on the site along with an archive of past newsletters from the last 12 months.

... And we've added some valuable new features:

  • A dynamic home page that highlights our services and includes a blog of recent news and events
  • A community calendar that displays all of the events listed in our E-bulletin as well as other upcoming community happenings
  • Simple online forms that you can fill out to submit tools for the Toolbox, postings to the E-bulletin, or events for the community calendar
  • Ratings and comment sections for every tool in the COCo Toolbox so that you can quickly find the best quality resources
  • An innovative community RSS news page that combines the current headlines and updates from dozens of relevant sources of information for community groups

*Enjoy and please contact us if you have any questions or feedback about the new site!

Must Reads

A Simplified Guide to Program Evaluation by Hedley G. Dimock

If you want to know how your programmes and services are working, this little guide provides an interesting mix of qualitative and quantitative tools to help you do the job. From planning an evaluation, to different kinds of designs, discussions of samples size and planning for programme improvement, Dimock explains the most essential evaluation concepts clearly and succinctly. Check sheets, ratings, charts as well as a couple Montreal case studies scattered throughout should encourage even the most mathematically challenged among us.

The Fifth Discipline: the Art & Practice of the Learning Organization by Peter M. Senge

Senge's management philosophy is based on the premise that 'learning disabilities' in any organizations can be reduced. The Fifth Discipline presents an alternative way of viewing our traditional hierarchical systems and suggests that the organizations that will truly excel in the future will be those that discover how to tap people's commitment and capacity to learn at all levels in an organization. He makes his point with stories, diagrams and self-administered exercises that encourage the reader to understand how we can each go beyond just learning the facts in order to learn how to learn, and to enhance our capacity to create. This may not be the quickest read, but it is a very thought-provoking read for all learners.

If you refer or provide contact information, this it would be greatly appreciated. If you only have a name and number, that's fine as well.
